The artwork included in the Minor Imperfections exhibit characterizes Claflin’s struggle to maintain a consistent identity while battling mental health issues. She uses fragmented photographic emulsion lifts and distressed collages of her facial features to illustrate a primary symptom of her illness - body dysmorphia, an obsession with perceived physical flaws. By repeatedly deconstructing her face in her artwork, Claflin achieves a greater understanding of her illness, enabling her to heal. Claflin’s ultimate goal is to demystify and destigmatize mental illness through her artwork.
 
 On April 12th from 6-7pm, the Grossmont Healthcare District’s Health & Wellness Library will host an artist talk featuring Claflin discussing the work and answering questions about her creative practice and the intersection of her art with her wellness. In addition, in recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, the Library will facilitate a panel discussion on mental health featuring the artist and community mental health experts on May 24th from 10-11am. Both events are free and open to the public.
