PROJECT NOTICE: LA MESA BLVD COMPLETE STREETS SEGMENT 2
The City of La Mesa applied and was awarded a $400,000 Sustainable Communities grant from the State of California to prepare a Complete Streets Plan for La Mesa Boulevard from Jackson Drive, under the I-8 freeway, connecting to Grossmont Center Drive. The purpose of the Complete Streets Plan is to create a street that accommodates for all users (pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and motor vehicle drivers) as well as provide improved connections to key destinations including Grossmont Center, Grossmont Transit Station, Sharp Medical Campus, businesses, and neighborhood services, while advancing the City’s Climate Action Plan goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
This project was divided into two segments. Planning for Segment 1 has been completed and includes segments on University Avenue from Spring Street to Memorial Drive, and La Mesa Boulevard from 4th Street to Jackson Drive. The current La Mesa Boulevard Complete Streets Segment 2 project began in January 2023 and covers La Mesa Boulevard from Jackson Drive to the I-8, and Grossmont Center Drive from the I-8 to Center Drive
What is a Complete Streets Plan?
The purpose of the Complete Streets Plan is to create a street that is safe for all users (pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and motor vehicle drivers), as well as provide improved connections to key destinations including parks, transit stops and stations, businesses, and neighborhood services. The La Mesa Boulevard corridor is located along San Diego Transit Bus Route 852, which provides direct access to both the Grossmont and La Mesa Village Trolley stations. Corridor improvements may include many new features such as: shade trees, attractive landscaping, traffic calming and safety improvements, comfortable bike facilities, enhanced transit stops, and more. Improving access to and from the corridor will create more vibrant and active neighborhoods and support the local economy. Learn more about the Complete Streets Integrated Design Manual.
